I developed this site after writing my 6th book—My Wisdom Inspired Life, A Provocative True Story.  I realized that there was not a site for people whose journey included the major wisdom traditions.  Also, in writing the book, I connected the dots of my life from Type A businessman at Procter & Gamble to a person dedicated to waking up so I can better serve others….this site is an attempt to do that…..Enjoy! Wisdom EmergingWhat’s the Meaning of Wisdom in the Wisdom Inspired Life Community?

Since the title of this book is My Wisdom Inspired Life, starting with a common understanding of what I mean by “wisdom” seems like it would be very helpful.

It turns out that “wisdom” is defined two very different ways.

The first way of defining the word is the way most people define it in our culture today. Very simply, if stated as a recipe, the definition looks like this:

Start by becoming very knowledgeable.

Add a dose of life experience.

Add two doses of high-quality judgment.

Not surprisingly, this definition leads to some further conclusions. For example, because of the “life experience” element, we tend to think of wise people as older rather than younger. If you search images for “wise people,” you find that most of the images are for people about 50 years of age and older. The first image from the search that comes up is for Albert Einstein. This definition also suggests that you need to be well-educated, either formally in academic institutions or informally with high quality life experiences.

The dictionary supports this definition. For example, the Merriam Webster Dictionary says:

Definition of WISDOM

1 a : accumulated philosophic or scientific learning : knowledge

b : ability to discern inner qualities and relationships : insight

c : good sense : judgment

d : generally accepted belief (challenges what has become accepted wisdom among many historians — Robert Darnton)

2: a wise attitude, belief, or course of action

3: the teachings of the ancient wise men

As helpful as this definition is, it is not the definition of “wisdom” that I am using. Rather, appropriately enough, I am utilizing the definition that comes from multiple wisdom tradition teachings. I believe that this definition will eventually become the standard definition, but it requires some significant personal transformations before being broadly accepted.

First, some background is helpful. The wisdom traditions tell us that we have two minds, an upper mind and a lower mind.  This can also be described as our knowledge and wisdom minds.

The lower mind is the capability where knowledge resides. We acquire knowledge through our five senses. As a result, knowledge comes from our external world.

In the lower mind, knowledge is managed by logic and emotions. This management has several goals including determining what knowledge is important and unimportant to us. We also want to know what knowledge is true and trusted and what knowledge is less reliable and even suspect. In the world of knowledge, the ultimate truth management tool is something like the scientific method. This method rigorously controls variables in an effort to determine truth.

Knowledge is a world of dualities. It is where good and bad, high and low, right and wrong, etc. exist. It falls to our logic and emotions to determine where specific pieces of knowledge fit.  Not surprisingly, people often see the same knowledge in very different ways.

The wisdom traditions tell us that the upper or higher mind is the home of wisdom. Unlike knowledge that is acquired when our senses focus on the external world, we acquire wisdom through an inner focus. Intuition, which is the voice of our soul or that spark of divinity, is our portal to wisdom.  Intuition exists in all of us, although it is largely dormant is most, occasionally active in some, and fully functional in very few people.

Unlike knowledge’s world of dualities, the world of wisdom is one of absolute truths. As our intuition develops, the insights we gain take on a level of truth that is greater than our knowledge that 1 + 1 = 2.
